A low-growing evergreen conifer from Japan. It is the "purist's" choice, capable of living for centuries. Its flexibility allows for extreme "windswept" or "cascade" styling.

Care Guide:

  • Placement: 100% Outdoor. In Quebec, it requires a dormant period (under 10°C) for at least 3 months. In winter, bury the pot in mulch or place it in an unheated garage to protect the roots from extreme -20°C spikes.
  • Light: Full sun is mandatory for tight foliage pads. Shade will cause the needles to "leg out" and weaken.
  • Watering: Never water on a schedule. Mist the foliage daily (they absorb water through needles), but only water the soil when the top 1cm is dry.
  • Soil: Requires a very gritty, fast-draining mix (e.g., 2 parts Akadama, 1 part Pumice, 1 part Lava rock).
  • Pruning: Never "shear" with scissors like a hedge, as the tips will turn brown. Pinch off extending heart-shaped shoots with your thumb and forefinger to maintain the silhouette.
